Location Overview

Drakesbad Guest Ranch is Lassen Volcanic National Park's famous retreat. It is located in a lush mountain valley within short hikes of steaming fumaroles, bubbling mudpots, and many fascinating hydrothermal wonders. Visitors enjoy overnight accommodations in the ranch's historic lodge, cabins, and bungalows; gourmet meals; and soaks in the famous hydrothermal spring fed pool. Since 1900, its guests have found hospitality, seclusion, restoration and recreation at Drakesbad.


Responsibilities & Qualifications




  • Ensure safety of guests and horses at all times; conduct guest safety orientations and pre-ride briefings
  • Guide and teach while saddling up guests and on the trail
  • Care of horses including water, food and grooming
  • Take an active role in seeing that equine area and equipment are properly maintained and used appropriately
  • Keep tack room and corrals clean and free of manure daily (per NPS standards)
  • Clean and fill water troughs daily
  • Arrange necessary services such as feed, medical care, horseshoeing when needed or as directed.



  • Experienced in riding, handling and care of horses
  • Knowledgeable about visitor services and amenities at the ranch
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to assess an individual’s riding ability and experience
  • Able to tolerate variable weather conditions
  • Able to reside on site for duration of the season (optional)
  • Willing and able to work weekends and holidays
  • Genuine concern for guests’ experience essential
  • Basic First Aid/CPR Certified
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean 3-year history, and no DUI within the past 10 years.
  • Reliable transportation.


  •  Experience in guided trail riding
